Friday the 13th - oooooooooo!
Ooooooo! I'm so scared! NOT!!

Today is the second of three Friday the 13ths we'll have in 2009, the previous one being last month, and the last one coming in November. This particular phenomenon happens only every eleven years. For some people, Friday the 13th triggers the unreasonable, morbid fear called friggatriskaidekaphobia, which is...wait for it... the unreasonable, morbid fear of Friday the 13th.
This word can be broken down into three parts - triskaideka, or thirteen; phobia, or fear of; and frigg. This part is the one i found most interesting, and didn't know until i looked it up today.
Frigga was the Norse goddess of fertility, love and marriage. She was the equivalent of the Roman goddess Venus. Friday was named in honor of Frigga*, as she was normally worshipped on the sixth day of the week (the first day being Sunday). When Christianity began to overtake that part of the world, the Christians declared Frigga a witch, and they began calling Friday the "witches' sabbath". Legend has it that Frigga was banished to the top of a mountain, where she convened with eleven other witches plus the devil to plot evils to be unleashed upon the human population on the days when she was formerly worshipped (Fridays). Thus, people came to fear Fridays and the number 13, and established a particular foreboding when the two combined.
Of course, the superstition we're most familiar with is the one about the Last Supper, where Christ met with his apostles a final time before His crucifixion. Judas was the thirteenth guest at this meal, and afterwards he met with the authorities to betray Jesus. Tradition has it that Christ was crucified on a Friday, too. (Shouldn't we be calling that "Bad Friday"??)
One of the things i could never figure out about this one is that, whenever Jesus met with all his apostles, there were always thirteen people there. The Last Supper certainly wasn't the only time there were 13 people in the group. It is true, however, that this was the only time Judas acted on his evil intentions.
We already know that a lot of buildings don't have a floor officially designated the 13th (although common sense dictates that the floor immediately above the twelfth IS the thirteenth, whether they label it so or not!), and many hospitals and apartment buildings won't have Room 13.
Businesses stand to lose millions of dollars as superstitious employees call off work on Friday the 13th, and there are those people who will not even get out of bed on that day, much less travel. Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of those who would never travel on the thirteenth day of any month, regardless whether or not it was a Friday.
And then there's always this:
Because of all these things, and the fact that most of us grew up hearing about and observing others' reactions to these superstitions, we always expect something bad to happen to us on Friday the 13th. What we don't realize is that bad things can and do happen every day - maybe not specifically to us, but to somebody, somewhere. This has always been true, and will always be true. But because we've becomed conditioned to expect bad things on this day, if anything does happen, it "proves" the superstitions true, and we remember the incidents more intensly and readily than if the same things were to happen on any other day.
My thoughts? If you're expecting trouble, you're gonna find it... Friday the 13th or not.
What do you think? Do you fear Friday the 13th? Do you have any special things you may or may not do today? Or do you shrug it all off as so much spooky silliness?
As for me.... TGIF!!

I plan wierd and wonderful meals on Friday the 13th, I do NOT use my chemistry set. I repeat, I do NOT use my chemistry set. K, just clarifying.
Now, that was quite interesting. I'm not easily spooked by days of the week and numbers! haha.
I never actually notice it's friday the 13th until someone mentions it... Lol. I guess I'm not very superstitious! =D
this post was great! Thanks for making me smile!!! :)
My friend was born on friday the 13th and it's her birthday today. So we'll be having a good ol' time.
I love how there is a word for people who are scared of the day.
This morning, as I logged into my computer at work, I realized it was Friday the 13th. I announced it to my coworker who went "oooh" and I cuoldn't tell if it was a sarcastic oooh or a worried oooh. It sounded a tad worried. So I proceeded to tell her about the original Friday the 13th, when the French kind and his lackey pope betrayed the Templar Knights to get their wealth. They were massacred or arrested and tortured, depending on each guy's fate. For me, knowing the history takes away the superstition. Now, if only the crazies out there would be so rational.
I saw that movie and yes there were parts where I jumped. But it postered weed. I don't do drugs, but seriously, come on! It was a movie that yes, did have me on the edge of my seat. Have you seen it? Go to the drive in, it'll be worth your time (consider it)

I knew triskaidekaphobia was a word. I did not know about "friggatriskaidekaphobia".
It's interesting to look up some of the information about the superstition. There doesn't seem to be one definitive answer to how it came about. There are even some who think it's a fairly modern invention, as it rarely appears in any literature before 1907 and Thomas W. Lawson's novel Friday, the Thirteenth.
It's just another day to us.
Ya know, your post was the one to inform me of anything special. I even knew it was the 13th but didn't put it together. Haha!Â
I always seemed to have good luck on Friday the 13th. If I was expecting money in the mail it would come on that day or seeing people I hadn't seen for awhile. I have reversed luck on that day i guess. LOL Actually I forget that it is the thirteenth. :)
Have a good weekend, Kitty.

I have always thought the fear of Friday the 13th to be ridiculous. (And we always told my sister that Saturday the 14th was worse, because she was born on a Saturday the 14th!
)
Great post.... I didnt know all of that!
well, a 'snack machine massacre' (you put in your 60 cents, push the buttons, whirrwhirrwhirr, and no snack) was the first part of my worst Friday the 13th. (Ended up putting in another 60 cents, and only got 1 snack in all.)
But worse, on my way home (a two mile ride on my bike), I must've bumped the gearshift...in any case, the chain fell off the pedal IN...bringing my bike to a complete stop. I go flying over the handlebars, and break my left collarbone and right wrist.
On a Friday the 13th.
@Undercover_Librarian - Ha ha! This reminds me of Grandpa down in the basement in "The Munsters"!
@jediwa72 - @SerenaDante - I'm the same way... if i hadn't looked at the calendar this morning, i'd never have known. I totally missed the one last month.
@mrsprosa - Always happy to make you smile, Mrs. P!
@jesusmoshes2 - Now, see, THERE's a good thing about this day!
@LostInTheLyrics - Yeah, there's pretty much a word for everything, i guess...
@BigToePeople - Thanks for pointing out that bit of history. That was included in my research on this, but i was afraid (haha) of making my post so long nobody would read it.
@fading_roses19 - Oh, no doubt about it... the "Friday the 13th" series is probably the scariest of all! (Well, there is the "Saw" franchise...) I was just meaning that those movies don't help us any when it comes to viewing the day with any kind of rationality...
@randomneuralfirings - I didn't know either until today. I always thought it was just triskaidekaphobia. It pays to look things up, huh?
@TornadoChaser@momaroo - I'm just glad it's Friday... i love that day!
@FREAK_MA - May your reversed luck continue!!
@der_lila_Stern - Your poor sister! Tsk tsk...
@Romans_837 - OW OW OW! I guess i'd tend to remember that day, too! (I hope you ate your expensive snack before you hopped on the bike....)
When I was a little girl - elementary age, don't remember how old exactly - one year I remember being terrified of Friday the 13th. I don't remember if there were stupid kids talking about it all week or what, I just remember trying to fake sickness and get out of going to school b/c I guess I thought something horrible was going to happen. Now I rarely notice that it's Friday the 13th.......
@TashaDW_18 - That's the problem... we're not born fearing Friday the 13th - it's a learned behaviour we pick up from those around us.
Years ago my teacher told the following: Once there was a woman that decided to stay in bed all day on a Friday the 13th. Everything went well until she discovered a mouse in her bed. In the process of jumping out of bed she caught her toe in one of her too big quilt stitches, got tangled up, fell out of bed and broke her leg. Don't know if this is a true story, but it left a lasting impression on me.
@katietroyer - That's a good one! It could happen, you know!
Very cool The word Triskadeikaphobia is said in the movie Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium, and I never knew what it meant. But now I do!
My birthday is on a 13, and I always love when it's on a friday. When I was a kid and it happened, we had a bad luck party with black cats and stuff like that.
I honestly think that the day the thirteenth is LAME.
IF I HADN'T READ YOUR BLOG I PROBALY WOULD'NT HAVE REALIZED IT WAS FRIDAY THE 13TH.
What about Apollo 13? What about the fact that Jack the ripper, Charles Manson, and Bernard Madoff all have 13 letters in their names?
Yeah, this year has a lot of Friday the 13ths. Whoever believes that bad things will happen on those days doesn't know reality. I went out with friends last night and last night was the 13th (friday) and nothing bad happened. We all had fun!
@TheDumberScott - I love your idea of having spooky birthday parties when your b-day falls on Friday the 13th! That sounds like so much fun, and a great way to kinda "thumb your nose" at the superstition aspect. Good for you!
@fading_roses19 -
@DKT1978 - No superstition in your house! Good.
@MixedUpMale - Hmmm... sounds like one of those "666" things...
@c_jamaica - There ya go! See?
Nope, doesn't bother me!! Never have been the superstitious type.
